Wardrobe, styling, and fashion hacks

There are so many hacks, tips, tricks, and secrets models and set folks share that we use to make clothes look great, to make shoots flow well, and to address almost every fashion emergency whether on the runway, on set, or in a shoot. But not all of these work in real life! It is important to realize that what looks good on camera, the tricks we use, aren’t always conducive to real life- those omg-long-fake-lashes that give you to-die for pictures look silly in real life and can look awful in pictures with friends because the shadows they cast give you an under eye circle (on set, we’re lit to prevent that). The clothes and dresses that look FAHHHBULOUS in print may be completely clipped up in the back (they can move the clamps so the camera never sees them or photo shop them out later). I’ve walked the runway with shoes taped onto my feet (yes it works, in a pinch or for a few minutes, but come on, you can’t live your day like that). The makeup that looks flawless on camera can literally (really, literally) look like a clown in real life. And those shots of  hair that seem to float on the wind yeah that’s not going to happen (it’s actually being held up by strings or people in greensuits on a green screen). These may work for your  instagram, but real life- sorry.  HERE are some of our really brilliant hacks that can help you make it through your date or workday whether you want to tweak an outfit before you leave or address a wardrobe malfunction (oh come on, it happens).

A safety pin can make a necklace longer or shorter. If it still isn’t short enough, you can pin it to your shirt or dress in the back and raise it to the length you need it.

If you use lashes, don’t leave home without a lash kit- use the case your lashes came in to store the glue, a small orange stick, a small mirror, and a mini eye liner.

If a shirt doesn’t fit in the chest well, double bra (also great for tshirts). Implants without the commitment 🙂

Cut the legs off a pair of control top panty hose for an instant tummy control under a super tight skirt without having to actually wear stockings. Don’t cut the legs this long, though, they’ll roll up. Just cut them so they’re like boyshorts.

MIND YOUR PANTIES- buy a no-show thong for skinny jeans, no show panties for your tight fitting yoga pants (or the knit ones- they show too- anything solid needs no show panties- no thongs for these, you can see it). ALWAYS check your undies in the light, they do show through, it’s rather tacky. Also note the color- nude is your best bet unless your skirt or dress is dark, then go for black.

If your shoes are too big, use duct tape to stick them in and stop them from sliding. If you’re going to be on your feet, you want a pair of shoes that’s a half sized too big. Tissue paper in the toe can get annoying, the tape works wonders.

If you have a pair of shoes that are too clip-cloppy and loud, cut cardboard to stick to the bottom (you can also buy real shoe silencers, but if you’re in a bind this works for a little while).

If you lose an earring back, cut a little piece of rubber eraser and use it as a back.

A pony tail band (or any rubber band) can tie your bra straps in if they’re sticking out of the side and can tighten a shirt to make it form fitting if you tie it in at the bottom and then roll it into the shirt.

If your bra straps slip or sticks out of an off-the-shoulder or awkward sleeved shirt, discreetly pin it to the dress sleeve or strap (pin from underneath so you don’t see the pin).

Duct tape and little circle bandaids work if you can’t hold up a strapless bra. Just make sure you aren’t allergic to the adhesive BEFORE you wear it for any length of time. Stick it just like you would one of those sticky bras, use the circle bandaids to cover your… buttons. When you take it off, use soap or baby oil – don’t just yank. You’ll regret it deeply.

Always wait until you’re finished your makeup to put on your shirt (foundation spills, eye shadow dust) but use a scarf to cover your face if you’re pulling a white shirt or tight necked shirt over your head. Another option is a robe or button up shirt (put the buttons to the back so the collar covers up to your neck).

Pins and clamps are the reasons why clothes look entirely different in a catalog or on a mannequin. This can work for you if you’re wearing a cardi or jacket.

If a skirt is too big in the waist (or shorts/pants), use a tied piece of elastic, a cut off elastic band from an old pair of pantyhose, or fold the top of control topped pantyhose (cut off at the thighs) over the waist. It will instantly act as a belt for those bottoms that don’t have belt loops (make sure your shirt covers the waist band)

Drop a one and done stick like e.l.f’s Multistick in your bag or leave one in your car for on-the-go-touch ups.
